Holiday Decorating Home Business

Holiday Decorating Home Based Business

Overview of this Business: If you enjoy decorating your home for the holidays and have a creative mind and are the slightest bit handy, you could enjoy this home business decorating homes for the holidays. Because of its seasonal nature, this could be a second home business that you could piggyback on another that is busy the rest of the year - such as a pest control or landscaping home business.

Pros of this Home Business:
  • Very low start up costs - no inventory to carry and minimal supplies. If your clients need additional decorations, they pay for them.
  • Very strong holiday demand might give you an opportunity to do something else the rest of the year for variety.
  • No licensing or specialized training required.
  • You can grow this business at your own pace through referrals from satisfied clients and word-of-mouth advertising.

Cons of this Home Business:

  • You may need something to do the rest of the year.
  • Like many other home businesses, you'll need to build up a clientele. Consider doing the homes of your family and friends for free to get the experience and to help determine what you should charge.
  • If you offer exterior decorating for the holiday, you may be climbing roofs or trees in inclement weather.

What You Need to Get Started with this Home Business:

You need customers - start with your friends and family. Consider advertising or posting bulletins in your church or other organization, or at local stores.

An organized means of building your portfolio - You could build a scrapbook that includes photos of the home you've decorated along with any written testimonials from your customers.

You may want to have a few backup "helper elves" available if you get a project and you want to get it finished quickly.

Holiday Decorating Business - Real Life Example:

Jeff Double was working as a floral designer where he had an opportunity to show his creative flair to customers when he helped decorate the downtown Butler shop at Christmas. "Basically, people started asking me for advice for decorating and they wanted me to make wreaths or swags. It grew from there," he said.

He now decorates three commercial businesses and 11 homes for Christmas throughout Butler County. The sizes of the jobs have ranged from $45 for putting up and trimming a tree for a frail senior citizen to $10,000 worth of decorations bought for a mansion. They decorate for birthdays, weddings and parties, too.

Most of the Doubles' clients are working families who don't have time to decorate and retired couples who lack the ambition to decorate the way they really want to.
